Autumn and a Bowl of Oatmeal to Start the Day in an Artful Way

It's official, now that it's November, we really are in the midst of a beautiful autumn.

Artwork by Isabelle Debrosse Hardesty
http://www.debrossehardesty.com/
I am a Miami native. Autumn was never a golden, red leafed, chilly time. Instead it was a time when the intense heat gave everyone a break. It was beautiful and just a little cooler, but you still knew you were in sub tropical weather. Palm trees swayed in the fall air, rustling their long blade like leaves. There was still plenty of sunshine and some days would really heat up, reminding everyone of how recent summer was.

I now live in Georgia. Autumn means cold, shorter days, but it also means beautiful reds, oranges, yellows and plums.
Shoes crunch up dried leaves that were once new, green and supple.

Photograph by Isabelle Debrosse Hardesty

No matter where I am, though, fall means having a bowl of warm oatmeal most mornings. I use my mother's recipe which includes cloves, nutmeg and a bit of lime rinds. The flavor is very full and so delicious. I like to sweeten it with a small amount of agave nectar. So goood.

And I love the old fashioned whole oats, not the instant kinds. The main reason is the nutritional value of whole oats versus instant. However, the taste is also much better when whole oats are used. Yes, it does take longer, but it's only time.
Whole Oats

In the mornings it's easy to skip breakfast or eat a cold bowl of cereal, but sometimes, only oatmeal hits the spot. That breakfast bowl just sits there empty, waiting for us to fill it.

That then carries us for several hours and helps start our morning. What will you fill your bowl with?

Autumn Thoughts and Plans

Here we are again with autumn all around us. I am originally from Miami, so autumn in Georgia is still very interesting.

The squirrels and chipmunk wars have begun outside. They claim the bushes, trees and fences as they hide their food for colder days. The birds are also preparing and planning their Southern treks soon to come.

The colors and sounds are very unique and welcomed.

Bill and I are working on new ideas for upcoming paintings. Until then, enjoy a browse through our online gallery: http://www.debrossehardesty.etsy.com/     http://www.debrossehardesty.com/

Photos From May 15th Volunteer Day at Clarkdale

Here are some photographs from May 15th when we painted three murals with the help of AMAZING volunteers. Debrosse Hardesty Gallery hopes that the three murals add beauty and warmth to Clarkdale Elementary students' new home for now. Bill helped so much and I was so happy to see my sister Rachel there and my Mother show up and help for over an hour!

It's a beautiful thing to actually see minute by minute how working together can make a difference. In the beginning of the day it was daunting to see the outlines on the wall waiting to be painted. But then the volunteers trickled in then flooded in. It was a wonderful day.

Debrosse Hardesty Gallery Helps Local School

We are so excited about May 15th!  Bill Hardesty and I, Isabelle Debrosse Hardesty, will be helping with the beautification of a local school recently hit with disaster.

On September 21,2009, Clarkdale Elementary was flooded up to the roof. The school was no longer fit for students or staff. Books, computers, supplies and more were completely ruined. Fortunately all students and staff made it out safely that afternoon.  History making rainfall swelled nearby Sweetwater Creek and waters inched up steadily all morning and crested to about 9 feet by evening.

The students had to be divided between two different local schools. The K-2 students are at Compton Elementary and on May 15th we are excited to volunteer our time to create three murals on the schools walls. It has been quite an adjustment for students and staff. We are glad we are able to help. Everybody can make a difference.

Spiritual Connection

Art and beauty are entwined. Painting something that is beautiful is a beginning point for many newcomers, but painting something with meaning is truly rewarding. The meaning is a secret treasure, first to be discovered by the artist. Creating art is a spiritual connection. To have your spirit alive and lead you as you create is a divine connection.

Spring

Everything around me right now is vibrant green or beyond imagination, pinks, purples and reds. The colors and rebirth of nature is comforting. Only a few weeks ago, where I live in Georgia, was brown, dull and brittle looking.

Nature is loving, the way it lavishes us with these colors. Butterflies and insects dance around greeting all of the plants with a visit.

I am so glad it's spring.  It's been a long time.

FUN ART TIPS AND MORE FOR ART LOVERS

Our art prints are printed on the finest professional archival paper. When you frame you art, be sure not to have your print in direct sunlight. Keep water away from your print too, that includes humidity. I would not hang my favorite art print or painting in my bathroom, or in my kitchen near any steam.

HAVE HAMMER AND NAIL - NOW WHAT?

If you're like me, hanging up a piece of art on the wall is a BIG deal. Where does it go? Should I have it in a group or by itself. Does it look cluttered or does it make a statement? The best way for me is to sketch it out and think about it for a day BEFORE I hammer holes or use the various hanging devices out there.

The old hammer and nail is a winning combo, however, take a stroll in a your local hardware store and discover new updated ways to hang art on your walls that are more secure and kinder to your walls. I personally love the Hercules Hook for a quick fix. Twist, push and turn! No hammer needed-if it's going into drywall. It holds up to 150 lbs too! And it leaves a discreet hole in the wall, not a gapping hole into another world. :)

Mix it up when you are hanging your new art on the wall. Use grouping or an asymmetrical, or uneven format to add pizzazz to your home walls. Be sure to keep your beautiful candles from your art too! Don't laugh, I visited an artists friend's home and she was busy fixing one of her paintings that a client mistakenly put near a candle-oops! We want to keep fires in the fireplace.

Haitian Singer Gisele Sings from the Heart

My mom, Gisele, has a voice that I usually describe as honey. She began singing as a child. The four lanquages that she spoke only made her singing able to reach more people.

Raoul Guillaume, one of Haiti's music icons and my mother, Gisele, a rising star, recorded some of Haiti's biggest hits in the 1960's like "Joseph"and  "Souvenir". "Joseph" was a song the young people loved  twisting to.

After leaving Haiti in 1967 due to its political climate, Gisele moved to the U.S.  She has recorded several albums and has performed in conerts countless times spanning over three decades. Her songs have been enjoyed in several countries.

My mother's singing inspiration was a wonderful mix between  Haitian songs of the land, French ballads, and old Spanish relics.

Her life experiences allow her to sing with understanding and emotions that are genuine and palpable.

Breaking beyond her role as a singer, Gisele  began writing her own songs. These songs  sound so wonderful that my brothers and sisters asssume that they are songs that everyone knows.

I wouldn't change my childhood for anything. I remember going  backstage with my mother and sister, Rachel, before various concerts.  My mother's beauty was familiar and unknown all at once. Here was the face we knew, but the stage makeup only enhanced her beauty.

The busy hustle and bustle behind the curtains was exciting and my sister and I would see muscians that would say hello to us.  We knew our mother was special, but as kids we knew that she was special to others too.

Then the nail biting moment of mom going on stage. She would walk with a certian posture that we recognized, becuse she taught it to us.

She walks to center stage and sings. Her voice reveals so much, compassion, love, hope and strength. The faces of the people in the audience remind me of  my brothers and sister's faces when we listen to her voice, but there is more.

Here in Miami, the Haitian Diaspora sees Gisele as a vibrant and alive link to their country, Haiti.

Then my mother sings"Haiti". Part of the lyrics translate to "Haiti, Haiti, I will love you for all of my life..." and you see tears, happiness, pride and love on the faces of the audience.

Instead of  nail biting anxiety,  Rachel and I watch with love as we see our mother almost glow with love for the audience.  She owns the stage and is comfortable with being there, singing from her heart.

My mother was an advocate of Haitians in Miami, she was actively involved in many behind the scenes moments in the 1980's. She is intellligent and understands politics enough to know that the people need a louder voice than the politicians.

Today, my mother's love for Haiti remains strong.  That is the country of her birth. The devastating earthquake  left my mother heartbroken and asking the same questions Haitians everywhere are asking, "Why?" and "What now?"

My mother's love for Haiti and her love of helping people has feuled her. Now she is ready to help Haiti again.
